Evaluating an Amazon Product Opportunity

Product research tools make it easy to find products with high sales. Finding products a new brand can realistically compete in is harder. These are the questions that separate the two.

Is demand durable?

Look at search volume over multiple years, not months. Stable or slowly growing demand is preferable to sharp spikes that may not return.

How deep is the competition?

Count how many listings on page one have large review totals, strong brands and optimized creative. If every top result has thousands of reviews and a recognizable brand, the cost to compete rises sharply.

What do customers complain about?

Critical reviews on competitor listings are the best source of differentiation. Recurring complaints about durability, sizing or missing features point to a product brief.

Do the numbers work?

  • Landed cost per unit including freight and duties.
  • Amazon referral and fulfillment fees at target price.
  • Estimated advertising cost per sale.
  • Returns and storage.
  • Resulting contribution margin.

What could go wrong?

Check for patents and trademarks, category restrictions, compliance requirements such as certifications, fragile or oversized packaging, and supplier concentration risk. A good opportunity is one where the risks are known and manageable.
