Amazon PPC vs Organic Ranking
How paid and organic visibility interact on Amazon, and how to decide what advertising is really for.

On Amazon, paid and organic visibility are not separate channels. Sales generated through advertising contribute to the sales history that influences organic placement. That is why advertising is often described as an investment in rank, not only a cost of acquiring customers.
What drives organic ranking
Amazon does not publish its ranking algorithm, but sellers consistently observe that relevance and sales performance for a given search term matter most. Relevance comes from the listing content; performance comes from click-through, conversion and sales velocity.
Where advertising fits
- Launch: advertising generates the first sales on target keywords.
- Growth: advertising defends and extends positions on high-value terms.
- Maturity: advertising protects branded searches and supports new products.
The metric that matters
Advertising cost of sale (ACoS) measures ad spend against ad-attributed sales. Total advertising cost of sale (TACoS) measures ad spend against all sales. A falling TACoS while revenue grows is usually a sign that advertising is building organic demand rather than replacing it.
The question is not whether ads are profitable on their own, but whether they make the whole business more profitable.
Common mistakes
- Running broad campaigns without negative keywords.
- Judging launch campaigns by the same targets as mature ones.
- Cutting spend abruptly and losing hard-won positions.
- Letting campaigns compete with each other for the same terms.
